Baking for Hydrogen Embrittlement

Finish Name

Baking for Hydrogen Embrittlement

Specification

QQ-N-290
QQ-P-416
QQ-Z-325
AMS-2750

Benefit

Hydrogen embrittlement relief  uses an industrial oven at a specified temperature to bake the hydrogen out of a part. Excess hydrogen can happen during pre-plating processes such as cleaning and pickling, or during electrolytic plating procedures, and can lead to brittleness and cracking if not removed.

Features:

  • After plating, all steel parts having a hardness of Rockwell C46 and higher must be baked at 375 F +/- 25 degrees F to relieve the embrittlement which occurs naturally in the electrolysis process.
  • Special baking cycles and durations are common. Pre-plating baking to relieve stress due to machining, forming or heat treatment are available.
